TRANSITIONAL KITCHEN & MUDROOM

LOCATION : DES MOINES, WA

PHOTOGRAPHY : TAYLOR ROBERTS PHOTOGRAPHY

This remodel transformed a previously closed-off kitchen into a light-filled, connected gathering space. By opening the wall between the kitchen and dining room, we created better flow and framed views of the beautiful Puget Sound beyond. To keep that connection as open as possible, the refrigerator was strategically relocated.

The range wall was simplified by removing upper cabinets flanking the too large hood, allowing for a clear sightline and easier conversation with guests seated at the bar (set apart by existing stairs that remained in place).

We paired rich navy cabinetry with crisp white quartz countertops for a striking contrast, while warm wood floors and exposed beams bring natural texture and balance to the space. Copper accents in the light fixtures, hammered sink and range hood add a touch of charm and warmth.

Adjacent to the kitchen, an underutilized entry area was reimagined as a highly functional mudroom, with an organized drop zone for the family’s daily comings and goings.

The final space pairs clean modern lines with warm, organic elements, creating a kitchen that feels elevated yet genuinely welcoming.
